Has anyone ever taken the simple davit plates such as the ones that are used on powerboats :poke:and mounted them to the stern or swim platform as a simple way to bring the dingy on the boat for storage or travel. (just hook on and flip her up against the stern? Logic tells me it should work, :doh:but you never see it done, why?

Weaver Snap-Davits. There's an article in a recent Mainsheet on using these on a 320. I talked with the guy at Weaver, who said it can be done but the davits have to be modified when made to bring the dinghy up higher, so its bow and stern won't catch waves when the mother ship is heeling.

I looked at these when I was investigation the Davit options. I determined that the entire dink would not be raised up enough to ensure protection from a nasty sea on your quarter.
I went with the Garhauer and have never regretted the extra cost. Plus it provides me a better place to mount my solar cells.

It's not even a matter of cost - I just need a good place to store the dink when I go home for the weekend, and the Marina does not allow it to hang from the stern davits of that type. I happen to like them as a option. I would most likely tow on a trip, or move to the deck. With the boat spacing it is kind of tough to lift the boat on and off the deck every weekend, but looks like that will be my option. (we discussed that a few weeks back on here) Thank you though...

Why would the marina object to your dink stored from the Davits?

Long Story

Well in the Pacific Northwest we have different sailing conditions, so the boats that have come in contact with those conditions usually mount their dinghy on the deck.

Bottom line is some boaters do and some don't take their dinghy out of the water.

I misread the davit instructions and put them up front.

While some states (like MI) have a plus 10% rule on the slips, WI law states that a boat must be fully within the slip, including any bow extensions, swim platforms, or davits. The fairway must be clear for boat traffic. (I think because the fairways are so tight to start with). So even with a 35' slip, and the fact that shoreline keeps you from getting right to the headwall there is no room.

So for you it is a question of the size of the slip you are willing to pay for.
I'm luck I'm on a private mooring so no such restrictions.

Well that and the fact I am in a small marina so 35' is the largest slip they have unless you move to a headwall... and they are full of powerboats.... It is another 35 miles, (on top of my current 125 mile) drive to go to the next closest marina with larger slips.

So you have ~4' more in you slip to spare correct...35'slip 31' boat.
They make Davits that swing in, but I don't think you would even need to swing them. Just pull the dink 1/2 way up take the outside out the dink and pull it up to tilt sideways. You would essentially have the Weaver profile, and have the protection of regular davits when underway.
