I have read several references to different years builds being different quality. I just purchased a 77 Catalina 25. However I have a chance to flip it for a 85. Can someone fill me in on general quality issues with these models. I have had the 77 surveyed no issues. Thanks.

If I had your question, I'd ask it of the experts: http://www.catalina-capri-25s.org/forum/forum.asp?FORUM_ID=3

They've had this discussion many times and can point you to their Q&As.

We had an 81 C25 for 12 years (-86-98). Bulletproof, rock solid. Other than a better gas tank locker, not much different than your 77. You could approach it a lotta ways:

1. What I got is mine and I have her fixed up just the way I want.

2. Whenever you get a new-to-you boat, there's ALWAYS something to be done.

3. When did you change your standing rigging? How about the other one?

4. Not all flips are = value.

5. How long do you intend to keep a C25?

6. If the newer one has better cushions and newer design cushions, hmmm...could be a real deal maker there!

7. Electrical system comparisons?

8. Engine reliability.

9. Are you aware of the headaches with a swing keel? We had a fixed, never had to replace a cable, worry about a mushroom or a winch under our stairs or the box in the cabin for the keel. Trailer headaches happen, too.

Build quality overall was very consistent and good.

The list is endless. And this from a guy who in 1998 bought a then-12 year old boat (1986) even after comparing it to new ones. By now, my boat's got twice the experience of what a new boat would have had! I replaced the standing rigging, got a newer furler than even the new boat would have had, like the interior better (even though they are very comparable but the teak on ours we think is better), we like the more compact cockpit, the wood and the dorades. My engine has 2400 hours, a new boat would have had as many as 1700, 'cuz that's what I put on the boat since we bought her; twice as many as the PO.

Your comps will be somewhat different, but those are the questions you have to ask yourself.

It ain't like cars. :)

Good luck.

Also, are you trading a dinette for a traditional layout? Does the newer boat still have plumbing for the head and sink or have they long since been removed? A lot of Catalina 30 owners prefer the older boats over the newer models, and personally I chose an older C27 over a C270.

Thanks for the input.

I like the older boat better. Fixed keel. Plumbing intact (though currently capped for the lake we are on). Cheeper. Plus is on the lake at the house so no transport. Just wanted to make sure I had not missed anything.

Thanks!

I had a 1985 C 25 exactly the same as the model U want to trade for. Don't bother unless the 85 is in very good condition. The swing keel was a pain in the ass to maintain & cost me some bucks to reglass the trunk when it leaked from a P.O.'s accidental grounding.
People complain about the older glass portholes leaking, but at least they don't crack in half like the newer lexan plexiglass ones do! The only advantage of the swing keel is in very shallow draft water & trailering. The rig is a pain to raise & lower, so we always left ours in a slip anyway. Enjoy the 77 till U outgrow it & then move up to a C-30 like we did. Awesome boat, everything that Catalina offers, just bigger & better. Cheers.

Good choice - p.s. If U have a model with the pop top option to raise the cabin top, do not raise it while sailing. The clamp that holds it to the mast track is rather flimsy & can & will slip and/or break off. The fiberglass top will then slam down rather hard & fast, & weighing over 100 lbs. can seriously injure anyone who would be undeneath it. Also check & replace all of your cotter pins in the fore & back stays & shroud turnbuckles. They're really flimsy & undersized. I nearly lost my rig whist sailing when my forestay cotter pin broke off! There's a lot of 25 cent hardware on sailboats that can cost U big time! Otherwise the C 25 is a good boat. Good luck with her.

Thanks for the input. Will check the hardware ASAP. I need to remove / reseal the windows. I have ordered the kit but would appreciate any real world advice if anyone has done this repair.

pss. There are no stupid questions, just people that are too stupid to admit when they don't know what they're doing! Cheers.
