silly oil change question

My M-25xp has the drain tube connected (I guess from the factory). Question about oil extraction procedure using this tube.

Do I just connect a hand pump to the pipe and pump away? Or do I need to loosen something else in order to get the oil to come out the tube?

Thanks for the help, this is my first oil change on the boat that I am doing myself.

Connect and pump away, you won't get all of it out. Good to do when the oil is warm.

Here is how I do it (heading to the boat now actually to do it). I run the engine up to temp using tap water to flush out the engine. I then shut it down and It cool for about 20-30 minutes. I then use an extraction pump though the dip stick hole to pump out the oil. Once I think I have it all I take the cap off of that tube and put the tube in a ziplock bag with an oil absorbant pad. I then put the hose and ziplock bag as low in the bilge as possible to let it drain while I change the oil filter. Put everything back together, add new oil and again run with tap water. I will also now add my antifreeze for winterization. Check the oil again after shutting down for about 15 minutes. Add if needed. All set for a winter on the hard.

witz is right. That's what it's there for. I bought a fitting at a hardware store to mate the end of the hose screw-in part to the hose on my hand pump.

I pump most of the oil out. But there is still some that will drain with gravity if you get the tube low enough. So I put the oil pad in the bag and then the tube in the bag and get it as low as possible in the engine bilge. I could do it without the bag but that could make a mess if the pad isn't placed exactly right. Plus after I am done changing the filter I can just drop it in the bag. In Mass you can through an oil filter in the trash if you drain it and put it in a bag with absorbent material.

However all service stations and many marinas have a drum where you can place filters to be recycled. Generally the same place you're going to drop off the oil.

The problem with the trash disposal is that unless you hot drained the filter and also punctured the anti drain back valve (sounds like you did not) there is a lot of oil in the filter.

Recycling is easier.

"Oil filters: Puncture domed part of the oil filter with a sharp tool. Drain filters on a rack while they are hot for 12 hours, capture the oil for recycling as described above. "

Used Oil Filters:

• Do NOT dispose of an undrained oil filter in the trash. Follow above handling instructions for draining used oil filters.
• Take used oil filters in a sealed bag or container to a municipal collection program in your community, if available. Many communities that collect used oil also collect used oil filters.
• If no recycling program is available in your community, wrap the drained used oil filter in a plastic bag with absorbents such as a rag or kitty litter, and place in the trash."

Thanks. Yes I know about the hot drain requirement. I also know that most of the filters for "recycling" don't actually get recycled around here. They typically get bulk consolidated and then shipped for daily cover at landfills. Most of those are not hot drained either. Even if the filters I put in the trash are not covered by other filters. They are definitely covered with oil or gasoline contaminated soil. So worrying about the small amount of residual oil in the filter does not make a lot of sense.

My question was based on being informed and being aware, not checking to see

if you followed the rules, wherever they are.

Here at my marina you leave the oil, filters, rags and etc next to a oil shed and the marina takes care

of the disposal of this for us ......Lord only knows what they do with it.
