There seems to be a lot of 336s out there and I have not seen anything about racing them. Simple question for 336 owner: What do you do to/for a 336 to configure it for racing? I'm interested in things like winch size, placement, geneo track modifications, spinnaker rigging, traveler issues, etc. For discussion sake, we'll assume budget is not an issue and we're going to get new sails and a folding prop. Mark, don't know what to say about racing the 336. We have one but do not race it.I know of another 336 owner but they don't race either. Don't know what that says about the boat or owners.Any way I just did not want to see your post unanswered.Good Luck with your racing !

I was hoping to see some interesting responses from others since I'm not a 336 owner. However as a part time racer... that winged keel will need a lot of attention... smooth it , fair in any imperfections, including the hull to keel joint and use a decent hard finish racing paint that you can wetsand. Get a folding or feathering prop for sure. If you're serious about sails, forget the roller furlers unless it has a removable drum or better yet, install a 'headfoil' system. Get a good sailmaker to measure the boat and advise on the maximum headsail size and wether you need additional genoa tracks. Same for the main .. no furler, and at least the top batten should be full and the lower battens IOR length for maximum roach. Possibly two reefs and a cunningham; you should not need a flatening reef if you get a loose footed main for faster adjustments. I'd look at how easy it is to adjust the traveler and mainsheet... Add a boom vang and run two jib halyards and the reef & outhaul lines to the cabintop winches thru sheet stoppers. In looking at the standard boat pics and specs you should have some pretty good performance. Before you race spinnaker, I'd first try a cruising fleet (jib & Main). Setting up for a spinnaker may require additional winches, more experienced crew and some expert advice on the spin halyard sheave and exit slot from the mast. Remove all extra weight from the boat before any serious races, and try to get several crew to race with you consistently.. but remember we're supposed to be in it for fun. Take some pictures and post them as you set up the boat. Good luck & good racing to you.

Do a little club racing with a stock boat. Didn't do well last summer do to rating given by club. Had the boat rated this winter, and instead of racing with 147 phrf, will be running with a 181 rating. Base boat should be rated 144, with spin, 110 jib on furler, and fixed 2 blade prop. We are racing non spin. So rating is probably most important, along with ability and crew. Any improvements will cost money and points. BTW, boat has shallow draft keel.
