Signet?????????

in dismantling my s2....i have found that the depth,windspeed,knotmeter,and the wind direction system is vintage (30 yrs old) signetmarine and all the parts are there ......has any one had experiance or know of anything about this system in regards to it being a good system to keep and use ....i have cked the mast head senders with an ohms meeter and so far that has cked out ok by there specs.....

any thoughts or comments are welcome...

not only were they and are they good instruments, they are still in business contrary to popular belief and you can find them at http://www.signetmarine.com/ for repairs and replacement. I guess my question would be, why would you even consider throwing away perfectly good working instruments? Chuck

I have 1985 vintage Signet instruments.. The depth meter and knot meter work fine.. The wind instrument doesn't .. I suspect bad connections .. haven't gotten around to working that yet. These guys are a lot more power hungry than the stuff that is available today.. but if one were to convert to LED lighting, I suspect it would get much better. I have been thinking TacTick wireless for the wind instrument if the connections don't fix it.

Signet has good support and will fix your instruments if the parts are still available. Some meters are antiquated, etc. and some instruments they cannot fix, but they will tell you and maybe even sell you something more up to date as a replacement item for less than normal new prices. Maybe is the key word here. The thing about new instruments is that the electronic technology will be more up to date, but you might not need the latest and greatest unless you are rich. In your case maybe the masthead unit is bad, or, as you mentioned, it might just be a wiring problem. You should be able to put an ohm meter on the leads from the masthead unit and get a reading. Signet will tell you how much current you should be reading.

Several years ago, Signet offered a trade in program that we took advantage of. After doing a comprehensive cost analysis (my son's B/S Personal Mgmt merit badge) for the benefits received vs the cost, we remained with Signet. The new instruments could be dropped into the original holes w/o any modifications for different mfgrs instruments. The Signet Instruments met all our needs and we didn't need to pay for bells/whistle functions that wouldn't really be used. Although we no longer have the boat, we still have spare round covers and a depth sensor.
