I disagree with SailMaine

even through I respect his knowledge of boats. This website owner's set the rules, not the users. If they don't like them the can start their own.

Brian D, one question

how do I know ypu are really Brian D? Ross, why do you publish you entire address? What if someone that is a nut on this site develops a hate complex and rushes to your home and kills you. I guess you would still be happy that you were dead honest. Stupid!

Jim....

In case you are not one of the ones "in the know" SBO will be undergoing a re-vamping with new software, changes and perhaps some new features and maybe even new rules. Phil is always open to suggestions and has, in the past, listened to many of "our" as in "members" suggestions. Sometimes the rules of a forum are developed or suggested by the members and adopted by the owners. I've seen it happen on many forums.. I happen to have a total of 33 different web forums in my bookmarks. Everything from sailing to photography to bird hunting. Of these 33 there are only three forums that don't require registration to post SBO, TS-BB and CS-BB all forums run by SBO. I know there has been big problems on the CSBB and they have lost a huge number of their regular posters, including me, compared to what it was 7 or 8 or 10 years ago. The CWBB which turned into the CSBB used to be the most active sailing forum on the net and it's been ruined by un-registered "posers". Phil's rules for that forum have, for the most part, been created by the users... Some may remember the transition from CW-BB shutting down that format and Phil stepping in to replace it with the CS-BB? Most will not.... I think you underestimate how much Phil listens to his customers...us...

I agree 100% with Jim NJ. This site belongs to Phil and he has done a great job during the times I have been able to attend. I don't think he needs our input on how to run it.

Brian D is actually my nom de plume. Even though the name is an anagram for... well, you figure it out.

SailMaine, I agree Phil is open

this is the best site I have found. I would not even visit sailnet after the way I have been treated by their old sales department. I told them to close up and open under a new name if they want me to come back. Why do I think sign-ons are a bad idea? Take a newbie for example. They just want to ask a simple question. They are not sure they even want a sailboat but they want to ask a question about sailing. WHY SHOULD THEY BE FORCE TO CREATE A LOGIN! You are limiting the site to people that are regulars. I think it is a BIG mistake. We want to attract people to sailing. Make it easy for them to join in the discussion. Then if then like it, they join the group. Just is they way I see it! But what do I know.

Change

Exclusive narrows, inclusive widens. Open exchange of ideas and information, without precondition ,expands the base and brings vitality. Each reader has a personal responsibility to determine if what they are reading is credible, you shouldn’t need someone else to sanction the validity of a idea for you . Now if someone says “my boat always -----------”it would be nice to know what kind of boat it is. So you can ask. There must be creative ways of dealing with malicious people without the old fall back of, lock the door, get a license. Activities are increasingly being based on the gated community model and this isn’t a positive trend. Their are thousands of people out there with valuable experience and ideas that, for one reason or the other, feel somewhat intimidated by participating in a very public internet forum . Any changes should be directed towards bringing these people in ,not pushing them further out. The openness and freedom of this forum is a good thing ,lets keep it that way

HAL I agree.

A sign on is not going to make the information credible. I have seen a lot of bad advice from sign-on want-to-bees.

I'd have to agree with Jim ,on this one

Signing in make no difference one way or the other. If someone is going to believe all the information one gets for free over the Internet, they're not wrapped to tight to begin with. Whether I sign in or not, makes no difference as to what I print. People want it to be easy and free. If they have to jump through hoops to get information, they'll keep looking. Yet they'll waste a entire day looking for free and easy stuff instead. I like the forum just as it is, but then again, it ain't my monkey. Keep it up, Ctskip

Changed my mind about sign-ins

We signed on and we always do if we am going to use the resources of a web site. However, Jim makes a good point and I can think of several instances when I would have asked a clarifying question on some web site but didn't because I didn't feel like going through all of the hassle of registering. We do keep a generic "Gmail.com" email address for registering with most forums and only use our "home" email for sites like this that we are on daily. Unfortunately, we usually read it in the evening and every problem that we could contribute an answer to, has been solved. I think limiting the posts of a new user to some reasonable number over a reasonable period would be :) eh! reasonable. Bye, lunch is over. Rip

Goes to show you

what I know....very little...*sry...I thought we were all signed in automatically ...I mean every time I post my avatar comes up...It's not like I can not be me or hide it...Unless you guys are talking about something else like passing a test or something ...I dont get it I guess... I thought the problum was mischief makers not regulars..they can and still will be "legit" mischief makers...I would think? ( MaineSail thinks I'm one...he wont return my email...:D ) When I signed up I thought I had to give some basic info...I dont remember things like that really so not sure... I have little to hide and it dosent bother me to put an email address, street address or even phone number to gain access to a site thats reputable like this one..as long as that information isn't displayed to everyone or sold to advertisers..( the 337 porn sites I belong to however get nothing from me....JUST KIDDING AGAIN PHIL :D:D:D) A clear conscious dose that I guess...I dont know...no biggie for me..I look at it this way...if someone is so inhibited as to being that secretive or anonymous I dont need their knowlage...its not like its privileged information and I wont get it from someone else....were not talking National Defence *edit* "Secretes" on this forum for cryin out loud.;)

Its not just the ID when signing on

Its the profile that is more important. It would sure be nice to know who is answering my post. Is it a daysailor, a cruiser, a racer? All of this lends more pertainance to their reply. It sure as hell works in reverse when someone else is asking a question. It puts things in better perspective if their profile is filled out. How many times a person asks a question and the replies are also questions such as...what size boat do you have, what engine? whatever. I feel that it is OK to not use your real name, but at least use your correct boat manufacturer and size. Also your experience level and what type of sailing and where do you sail. Tony B
