I don't have a stay tension gauge, i'm wondering if someone with experience can answer a question. The leeward side, short stays are showing a slight bit of sag (in only a 10 mph wind). They seem tight to the feel, a lot tighter than my Potter-19's were. The long stays seem Ok, strange because i would think that they would show slack (being longer) before the short stays would.All that aside i just love how this boat sails, seems to point well and take the Lake Erie chop, even in light wind.Bob

Slack in leeside lower shrouds

Bob,I have a 222 new to me this season. My understanding is that you always tension the fore and back stays so that the turnbuckles are hand tight and even. Then tighten the upper shrouds (longer ones) also and tight and even. Then tighten the lower shrouds until there is no slack. Sight the mast to make sure it is straight.The leeside lower shrouds will go slack while under sail. This is normal.I am also looking for a sure-fire way to rig with proper tension (without the benifit of a tension guage), but the above method is straight from the 222 owner's manual.Hope this helps. If anyone can add to this, I would also appreciate the info.Lee

Thanks Lee, I may at this point have the side stays a bit over tensioned. Had a good sail Sunday, consistent 8-10 mph with a few 15 mph shots. Boat gives you allot of confidence.happy sailsbob
