I'm planning a trip north to include Sidney BC in July. I haven't traveled into BC for a few years (since 9-11) and was wondering if there are any things I should know about getting in and out of Canada. I understand there is a port of entry somewhere in Sidney. The Sidney area happens to be one place I haven't sailed into before, but I hear it is a favorite of many sailors. I would probably reenter the US at Roche harbor or Friday Harbor.

Canadian Customs

There is a boating magazine published in Vancouver, PACIFIC YACHTING (www.pacificyachting.com). In the June 03 edition, page 33 there is an excellent article on current Canadian and US clearing procedures and the changes since 9/11. It also includes a list of Canadian and US reporting stations including those in the Sidney area.

Sidney

Easy check in at Sidney. When you pull into the marina by the city, there is a phone that connects directly to customs from the dock just to the left of the entrance. It's an easy procedure. Just a few questions and they issue a clearance number. This was last summer. Sean

Port Sidney Marina

Customs dock in Sidney is at the Port Sidney Marina which is a very nice marina situated right in downtown Sidney - full protection from all seas with a massive rock breakwater. It's a great place for provisioning or shopping, but if you want to experience the gulf islands, there are many great anchorages nearby - check out the cruising guides which are very helpful.
