side stays on an O'Day 19

This winter I took the safety coverings off of the side stays replacing them with new covers around the turn buckles. To do this I took the stays off of the chainplate. I have the original instructions with inset pictures. The instructions say the lower side stays are forward on the chainplate, the upper stays aft. The full drawing of the boat match the instructions. However the insert drawing shows the stays crossed which seems to put the lower stays at the rear. The previous owner had them crossed.

Since the chainplate is all of two inches long the whole thing makes me scratch my head. What's the recommended method? And why is it so specific?

Uppers are swept, the lowers just go into the mast below spreaders, and don't sweep as much as the uppers. Just looks right to me with the uppers behind the lowers.
