Side stay tension

Having had one of the T-bolts snap on one of our side stays I am in the process of replacing that one plus two others which looked suspect. My question is: what is the rule of thumb about setting the tension? We have been sailing using the previous owners settings. I realize you can tune the mast for different levels of performance, but I am looking here for some general guidelines. Any help would be appreciated. thanx in advance. gary

Gary, The Hunter owners manual will give...

a very basic instructions for locating the mast rake point and somewhat of a plan for starting tension of the stays. I had to do the same thing as you but I replaced all 4 toggle bolts. Measure the length of the old bolt assy from the U-plate that fits over the chainplate u-bolt to the first exposed thread above the turnbuckle. The new set-up must be the same length. That's basic and nebulous as hell. Break with a $50 dollar bill and get a LOOS gauge. Then you can adjust it very accurately and easly. It will also sail a heck of a lot better and faster. Ray

How do I tell

if my H22 side-stay turn buckle U-bolts need replacing, or our suspect of snaping?

Andy, Have they been bent? Stainless steel..

is very unforgiving and if bent, when bent back to original shape, will break. Ray

demasted

I wouldn't use stainless turnbuckles. I got demasted because one was bent just slightly. I now use chrome over bronze turnbbuckles. I upgraded the standing rigging to 3/16 and turnbuckles to 5/16 I don't use a gage for tension but I think it would help alot. This setup is the same they use on J 24s.Hope this helps happy sailing george m hunter 22 s/v Tangerine

LOOS gauge?

Ray- Thanx for the info. I am confused about just what a LOOS gauge is. My local maringe supply store (he doesn"t like sailboats) says he has no idea what I am asking for. thanx again gary

Gary, A Loos gauge is available at West Marine

and just clips over your shrould. You pull back on it and read the number. This tells you the ammount of tension in pounds of each shrould. Greg at Hunter Marine can tell you what you need. I set mine at 15% of rated breaking strength. The gauge also measures wire size but you should know the size before buying the gauge as there are 2 models. The store can help you. Ray.

Lower 10%, Uppers 20%

The rule of thumb for shroud tension is 10% for lowers, 20% for uppers. This is relative to the tensile strenght of the rigging. 5/32" stainless steel has a tensile strength of 3300#. It's 4700# for 3/16". Please note that not everyone agrees on these precentages for smaller boats. Some say the 10/20 rule is too tight for a smaller boat. I know that on the H26, Hunter does recommend those percentages. Ron Mehringer s/v Hydro-Therapy
