I saw a sailboat with teak side stay covers. They were half rounds, made of teak and held together with three points of white sail tape. They looked like they were four to five feet tall (from the deck up) and looked to be 2 inches in diameter. Does anyone know where I can find these?

Rollers - not covers

What you are speaking of are rollers and not covers. They are loose-fitted teak rollers so that they roll as the genoa passes over them and the genoa doesn't drag across the shroud and fray them. I have a friend that has them and bought them at an upscale marine store (but I don't know which one). They were $$$. :) P.S. Google "shroud rollers" and you'll find a bunch of hits.

You can get

plastic ones that work just as well (though they're not as fancy) at most marine stores or through a rigging shop. You'll have to take the turnbuckle off to put them on.

Make them loose-fitting

If you really think you need shroud rollers, make sure they fit loosely so that air can circulate. I removed the tight-fitting plastic covers from my shrouds and found all sorts of life forms that hasten the demise of stainless steel. Unless you have serious problems with the genoa hanging up, you are better off leaving them exposed.

ROLLERS

Make your own with 1 1/2" half round from any Home Depot or Lowes. All you need is a router to make the appropriate channel in the center of the half round. Use the wood type you want, and finish them the way you want. Check the archives I think someone gives a pretty good description on how to make them. John J

The best shroud rollers available...

Hello n50wb : Until this spring we had the white plastic shroud covers that are available through West Marine stores. These are cheaply made & are prone to settling into a state of being warped, if (like us) you also roll up your headsail tight while not in use. We recently purchased a set of shroud rollers from US Spar & they are wonderful. They are pictured on the new Beneteau 473 in the Beneteau USA website if you want to have a look. If you contact Julian Crisp at 386-462-3760 & purchase a set, no doubt you'll be as pleased as we are. Regards, Paul. www.winpipe.ca
