Bought a 1985 Hunter 34 last fall. I'm new to large boats and Hunters. The shut off cable was tough to pull but it worked. This spring it would not budge and I had to throw it manually at the engine to shut it off. Any tricks to get this working or do I just need to replace the housing and cable. How do you remove the cable at the ignition end? I assume you need to remove the mounting plate(glued on)and the paneling on the inside? Is there a cable specific to the boat or will I need to have one cut to fit? Thanks for the advice.

Replace it soon.

Jim: Replace it soon! If you try to pull it at the instrument panel, you will eventually crack the panel. We mounted ours down below. This solved the problem permanently.

Replace it

I just replaced mine this past weekend. I have a 1984 version and bought the yanmar replacement cable for $25, I think it was 9 or 10 feet long. I have a piece of wood in my aft berth that gives me access to the back of the panel. to unscrew the nut that hold the knob in place.

Straight cable runs

When you install the new cable, make sure the runsa re as straight as possible and avoid any sharp turns. This will delay the cracking of your engine plate. I say delay because every one cracks the engine plate in the end.

Questions

Fred, I like the shutoff solenoid and starter solenoid ideas with remote buttons and am planning to replicate them on my H34. Question #1--the shutoff solenoid looks a lot like a British sportscar hydraulic clutch solenoid, but what is it really? Is there a domestic autoparts equivalent (diesel truck fuel shutoff, etc.)? Question #2--there appears to be a little slack in my shutoff cable at the lever end, which can easily be adjusted out in the cable sheath mounting and pull-wire connection. While fooling with this I noticed that there is some movement in the shutoff lever before it feels like it engages something in the housing. How much pre-tension did you put on this lever as the bead chain in your arrangement appears to be straight out and tight?

selenoid replacement?

See link to ebay listing. Is is likely this will work? probably from a tractor. Cannot find a selenoid like the one pictured that will mount to engine. Googled all over the place. Also cannot even find a replacement shut off cable. If I go that direction apparently I need to call a Yanmar marine dealer.

These are very common. They're on every small diesel I know of including my tractor. You can also check with generator manufacturers. I asked for a shut-off solenoid at a parts house in Key West and that's what the man gave me. Works great. It's just a plunger. The slack at the shut-off lever is no biggie. As long as the engine is shut off when desired, what ever slop is in the bead chain or cable or,,, doesn't matter. If you don't have enough slop, well, that's not good either.

Where did you buy the replacement cable

I am considering replacing the cable. Where were you able to find it? Thanks.

Common Problem ...

Same problem on my H35. The cable is sticking, and the engine panel is cracking and about to break. The cable looks relatively new, but water must have worked it's way down inside the cable to a low spot and gummed it up or something. I was going to get a better cable, and mount it elsewhere (not on the panel), but the solenoid idea is very attractive.

Thanks...

Fred. Was concerned that there was too much free play in the shut off cable while I was replacing fuel line "washers". Live in farm country, with Graingers and Tractor Supply stores nearby so should be able to find a similar solenoid. Thanks for the pointers. Could have used your remote buttons while bleeding the engine today to get it to start then run. Have moved that idea to the top of my list of improvements to make!
