I made my decision to try and fix my shurflo fresh water pump. I bought the valve kit for 13 dollars, installed it and no change. The motor keeps running and bad pressure. I was affraid of this. Anyway, before investing anymore money in this pump I called shurflo and asked a few questions. Turns out I found 3 loose screws that apparently fell out of the plastic drive assembly and thats what is creating my black particles. He told me at this point he would replace the pump with the same model. Forget the quieter pump. Sometimes things don't work out however I will get this fixed with a new pump and be up and running tommorrow. I have the model 2088 and it looks like a few pieces can fail.

but kinda stubborn and not giving up YET

I brought the pump home and tore it apart on my desk. Didnt let my wife see that. After looking at it alittle more I think I will replace the screws and try it anyway. Another 75 miles down to the marina for one last try. I did hook the pump up to my battery charger from the garage to see if it had a very good sucking from the in line. Appears to have good suckage. And builds pressure for a good blow on the out side. I just know this is the cure and will report in later.

And look how much you learned about...

...water pumps--that you wouldn't know if you'd followed some of the advice you got to just forget trying to repair it and blow $90 on a new one. It'll come in handy one of these days...you'll prob'ly save someone else's cruise--prob'ly for the guy who'd toss his out and buy a new one, but there aren't any WM stores at sea. :)

.... no west marine stores at sea to buy rebuild kits? Once of prevention = pound of cure perhaps.

You're right about the "ounce of prevention"...

That's why you should always keep an assortment of spare valves, seals, toilet rebuild kits etc aboard...Also replacement impellers forevery device that uses one...'cuz even brand new diaphragms, seals valves and impellers can fail. Otoh, they won't help you much if you don't know how to change 'em. :)

Fixed

Put the screws that fell out back in place, put the unit together in place, turned the water pressure on and whoopeee, it works. As I was explaining this to another boat owner, he said his shurflo pump runs all the time and can't figure out whats wrong with it. I said "no problem" lets take it apart and look at it. How things change in a couple of days. Anyway, thanks for your help. Craig on the river.
