I have an 1983 O 23 and am wondering how people determine shroud tension. I would prefer not to buy a Loos ( I am really cheap). I am sure my spreader shrouds are too loose, there is a LOT of movement when thay are not under load. How tight should they be? Thanks Jonathan

I do it by feel. I get them all hand tight, then take out the boat and put it on both tacks, making sure that the lee shrouds are snug (not tight, but snug) in a stiff breeze. The lee shrouds should definitely not be flapping around under any circumstances.

shrouds are simple
According to one of Odays Manuels the lower shrouds should be hand tight and the upper stays should be hand tight plus 3 complete revolutions as a general rule. They state that the leeward shrouds will appear loose and is not a concern if you have followed these simple tightning guidelines.

Tension
Is your boat in a slip or on a trailer? If you have your boat in a slip, ask around and find a tension gauge and get them set right. That way you don't have to worry about damage caused by over tightening or running them too loose. If on a trailer and you don't want to spend the 60 bucks on a gauge, follow the general rule of hand tighten the inners, three extra turns on the uppers. Don't forget that the forestay and backstay require a little more tension than the shrouds. Good Luck Brian
