Hi -

I am tryiing to get the correct tension for the inner and outer shrouds on my H36. What I am looking for are the tension numbers that should be used (and measured) with a Loos (or other) gauge.

I know I can do the old trick of "make em tight, and then sail close-hauled on both tacks and remove the slack"......but I prefer to pre-set them right in the first place.

I have searched the forums, but cant seem to find this info for my H36. (And the manuals dont seem to have the numbers either )

If you have the numbers, please post them !

Thanks,

Paul

Thanks !

I have the B&R rig (no lower support brackets). The document has great info in it.

So for the shrouds on the H36 - (8mm) , the breaking strength is 12360 lbs.

Selden say to set the shrouds @ 20% of this for the B&R rig - so i willl dial them in at 2400-2500 lbs to start with.

Thanks again for the link.

Hi PKFK,

I had a similar concern and managed to get a response directly from the 'after-sales' folks at Hunter.

The following was my email:

"Good Evening,

I recently purchased a Hunter 35.5 Legend and I am having difficulty in obtaining the proper tension requirements for the stays and shrouds.

The Hunter Owner's manual gives the method of rigging and the priority of tensioning, i.e. the tensions should increase from the lower shroud, to intermediate to upper shroud -- with the upper shroud attaining the maximum tension. As well, the forestay is to be tightened to "half-open-turnbuckle", then the backstay tensioned.

I have a tension gauge which will measure the tension for the 7/32" and 9/32" stays and shrouds; however, I cannot ascertain what the proper tension readings should actually be in terms of foot-pounds (or any other applicable reading). As well, the lower shrouds are the same size (9/32") as the upper shrouds (9/32") and all correspondence that I've been able to obtain indicates that the tensioning for this size of shroud should be the same -- which is contrary to the Hunter manual stating that the shroud tension should be increasing from lower to intermediate to upper (the intermediate shroud is 7/32").

Any assistance in this area would be greatly appreciated and if you require any further information regarding hull number, date of purchase, ownership, etc I will be most willing to provide."

I received a prompt reply, and they gave me the attached documents as their reply.

Of note, 20% of the breaking strength of the cable seems to be the proper tensioning.

Hope this helps,
Rob
