I want to add shroud rollers to protect my headsails, but was discouraged to see the high price of a pair of plastic rollers. Does anyone have any alternative solutions that won't cost eighty dollars for a pair of simple plastic tubes? I thought of simple plastic plumbing pipes, but I'm not sure it would work hanging loose over the shrouds. Many thanks.

Look in Oday archives

Look in the Oday archives for "skipper home made turn buckle covers". I think it will answer your question

Your idea works fine...

Yes, "plumbing pipe" works fine as long as you don't mean metal pipe! I actually have found Plastic conduit is better for me, though it conly seems to come in grey,it is thicker. Get a higher schedule (thicker) PVC pipe...you may not find the thicker stuff at a "home depot" type store, and may need to go to to a plumbing speciality store...Use smaller to cover shrouds, and bigger, inch and a half or two inch, or what ever you need over turnbuckles..I've used PVC forever and it is priced right, lasts along time and is every bit as good (I think better) as the hundred dollar covers...you can even take "caps" drill them and use them as end covers if you want, though I never have as I thought they might trap water...
