I saw these covers on some of the boats and would like to get some
Are these the same kind like when you wrap around your pipes at home to prevent freezing ?
What thickness should they be?
Home Depot, Lowes, that kind of store?

Made my own from 1 1/4" PVC pipe with end caps in which I cut a slot to allow for the shroud wire. Cost about $20 to do all 8 wire vs the outrageous West Marine price.

Nelsonhow,
I am interested!
I don't know much about the pipe you are talking about, or the end caps tou refer to: do you remove the shrouud, one at a time, and insert through?
Can you tell me more about it?
I seem to cut myself everytime I go past those bloody things!

There are other solutions besides shroud covers which prevent you from keeping an eye on critical components. I don't even tape over cotter pins and, no blood on the decks.

Cotter pins are cut short so that they do not extend past the edge of the fitting the clevis pin goes in. The ends are filed and sanded round and smooth. After insertion in the clevis pin, the ends are each bent just 15 degrees. This avoids bending them enough to weaken the metal so they might break off and fall off. It also eliminates the need to bend them fully around into hooks that grab lines and flesh.

Go to a welding supply house and spend about 20 bucks for a bundle of 316 stainless steel welding rod. After the rig is tuned, bend "]" shaped pieces the length between the holes in the screw ends of the turnbuckles. Stick the pieces through and bend the ends around inside the turnbuckle body.

PVC tube works well but requires the shroud to be disconnected to install
You could fabricate a sumbrella and Velcro cover similar to the anti-chafe that you use on dock/anchor lines.
You could trim off the excess cotter pin and just leave it nude. It does not take much of a cotter pin to do the job.

It's regular 1 1/4" pvc plumbing pipe available in Home Depot or Lowes and the pipe end caps are the 1 1/4" end caps sold to match the same pipe. I cut the pipe in about 18" lengths. I installed them when the mast was pulled for the winter but you could easily remove one shroud at a time and slip the tube over the shroud and then reconnect it. For the back-stay (mine is split) I'd probably use two of the halyards tied to the toe rail in the stern to temporarily support the mast before I disconnected the back-stay.

I drilled a hole in the top of the pipe cap in the center slightly larger than the diameter of the shroud and cut the side of the cap and the top up to the hole on top. The cut needs to be wide enough to allow the shroud to fit though. Once the cap is on the shroud you slide the cap down on top of the pipe section. I then put a piece of white tape around the side of the cap, and it keeps the cap from falling off if it pops up off the pipe.

After it's installed you can easily slide the pipe and cap unit up to inspect the turn buckles underneath.

Works for me. If youu're interested let me know and I can take a pic next weekend and post it.

Yes, please do!
I am pretty stupid with stuff like that: give me a stove and I can cook up any portuguese dish, but when it comes to this kind of stuff, sorry...

Jorge;

As roger said, there is no good, compelling reason to cover the shrouds other than cosmetic. The only way I can explain it is to compare it to a sprig of parsley on a steak. Might look nice but who ever eats it?

Those covers do however trap trash and moisture, promoting corrosion. Also, if you are grabbing at one of tham as you are going over the side it will roll, making it tougher to hold onto. My OPINION is to leave thecovers off and treat the pins properly as Roger suggests.

Took ours off

Accelerating the corrosion and weakening of our standing rigging wasn't worth the reduced wear on the mainsail while running.

We are comfortable grabbing the bare shrouds while going forward, if there are no fishhooks. And if there are fishhooks, it is time to think about new shrouds.

Quite right!
I will trim the cotter pins like Roger suggests

We should take a moment here to remember the great Rod Stephens who I had the privilege of hearing this procedure from for the first time personally. I also had the honor of working with him on a project but that was no privilege, believe me. But, that's another story.

BTW, did anyone here know that he was the designer of the WWII DUWK's? I tried to make the one I designed look as much like the originals as possible but the owner's paint job kind of ruined the effect.

I took mine off this spring. In addition to holding debris and moisture, they provided a hiding place for spiders. Took care of the sharp cotter pin issue by switching to cotter rings.

Jorge, there may be some confusion here. David's comments relate to those white split covers that some use over their shrouds. These cover the wire itself above the covers that you are asking about. Almost like your lifelines except these are split. My boat had both wire covers and turnbuckle covers when I bought her. I stripped those off to find corroding wire. Not damaged just the beginning of what looked like rust. Then the first time I had the shrouds loose I took off the turnbuckle covers. I also use the cotter rings, one on the chainplate pin and one on the upper turnbuckle.

I have no problem envisioning a "Downeast Duck" storming the beach at Normandy, or is that Coney Island Beach?
