Shroud Cotter Pins

Is there any reason the shroud cotter pins shouldn't be bent back against the turnbuckle? The rigging on my boat was replaced five years ago and the pins are spread just enough to keep them from sliding out. I'd like to bend them back against the turnbuckle then wrap them with tape.

Thanks,

John

As you know the pins are there to prevent the shroud from turning and getting loose. Previous owner probably didn't want to risk damaging his jib or his ankles. You idea will work as long as the pin still prevents the turnbuckle to move. I use rings instead of pins. The rings are first inserted on one side of the turnbuckle then into the shroud hole and the shroud chainplate hole. For angle protection, I use pvc boots.

Thanks. I can't believe the PO wouldn't have torn himself up the way they're sticking out.

There is no force present pulling the cotter pins out in the usual arrangement. Over bending probably will not damage them but is not necessary. Tape or other appropriate cover is a good idea. Never reuse (straighten and re-bend) a split cotter pin. Ring type cotter pins can easily pull out by snagging on a line although taping might prevent that. Make sure your split cotter pin is stainless in a stainless clevis pin and the correct size. The diameter should just slip fit in the Clevis pin hole and the cotter should not be overlong. Cotter should have some clearance to the side and possibly a washer as well. Time honored application in all kinds of machinery.

If applying tape, there are two suggestions.
First do not tape all around the turnbuckle body as you need to leave an opening at the bottom to allow water to escape vs remaining in the turnbuckle body. Secondly, let the last of the tape be relaxed on the last two turns to avoid coming apart
