I had a leak in my raw water strainer cap and could not get water in. Subsequently, I 'lunched" the impeller. Replaced the impeller and fixed the cap by installing a new o-ring. Seems to be pulling water fine with good output at exhaust. Question: Should I start pulling hoses and opening up heat exchanger looking for impeller parts? What are the odds these small parts of impeller will be pushed through the system and out? I have a Yanmar 4JH5E (54 hp).

PS to previous question - has anyone ever opened up the heat exchanger?

I am not familiar with your specific engine, but if you simply remove the hose where it enters the hear exchanger, any little pieces (if any) will be there. Usually it's difficult for them to pass through from there inside the heat exchange.

The impeller fins that you did not recover, are still in there. They don't break up small enough to pass.

Thanks guys; problem resolved. I located the o-ring for the cap on the raw water filter and reattached the hoses. Water flow is fine and most of the particles from the impeller were in the discharge hose on the pump. Ran it for 30 minutes with good exhaust water flow. Nice to have a site like this to "ponder our problems".

We recently found impeller bits in the hose. Grrr. I don't know why the previous owner didn't check when it came apart.
