I have a Catalina 22 I received a ships bell for Christmas. I would like suggestions on where owners might install the ships bell? my idea is on the port side of themast just below the cleat and above the jib halyardexit from the mast, then brining the rope back to the cockpit to allow ringing of the bell by the Captain or helmsman. The bell is 6" brass with nickle plate, included is a lanyard app. 4" to 5". the bell would face the port side, and appears to not iterfere with the workings of the sails. The lanyard would be the only part affixed to the mast with screws, alowwing the bell itself to be dismantled if need be. It gives a nice elegance to the boat and could prove functional as a safety sounding device for fellow boaters. Is there any maritime law concerning the proper installation of a ships bell? Thanks for any comments, Keith

Mount it where it can be heard 0.5 miles away.

Your bell sounds quite shippy and should make an attractive addition to your boat. However, there is no Federal requirement for your 22' boat to have a bell (a bell is required if your boat is 39.4' (12 M) or longer). There may be a state requirement for a bell (I didn't care enough to research the NC requirements). Most ships bells have a demountable bracket (or two) so you can mount the bell above decks when needed (in times of limited visibility), but can be mounted in the cabin when not needed above deck. This will make the bell more secure from theft and keep it looking attractive. Steve Alchemist C-320

You might want to mount the bell on the inside of your boat. Mounting it on the mast, while looking good, will get in the way when sail changing, not to mention the dissimilar metals, bronze to aluminum, will create a pretty decent pocket of corrosion within one season. Either way, inside or out, I'd make fabricate a muffler or "wrap around" for the hammer or with every wave you hit the bell will ring and ring and ring... which would drive me freakin' nuts!
