2nd try
Alan,
Respectfully, I have the same issue that my water strainer isn’t visible.
But, what I did instead was install an intake sensor (Aqualarm), which loudly announces if the intake is getting blocked. That sorta achieves the same thing, without having to relocate the strainer.
Or,,,
Just for you geeks out there,,
Get a $70 IP camera and watch your strainer on your iPhone.

In regards to your shower..... why not just Bring the discharge hose to the hull and pump over board and skip the sump? Seems like it adds just one more thing to clean.

Good luck

Your question is valid. To skip a sump box, you would need a (rather noisy) pump to be running continuously while you are using the shower. These pumps also need strainers, which clog, etc. Having a sump box allows you to have an automatic drain system, that when the box starts to fill, then a float switch enables the pump within the box.
Sump boxes have been around forever, and are favoured by boat builders because they are relatively cheap. But, they leave a long term maintenance problem for the owner.
As stated, the newer systems, such as the Whale IC are far more robust. They cost about double of an average sump box. But, it’s a one time install with zero maintenance.

Yea sounds reasonable. But My shower pans have always had some room so I wash, rinse a bit turn on the pump. Gives a little soakin’ for the dogs before I wash them. It’s not like a shower at home where I’m in there for 20 minutes water full pressure all the time. But yes I do see the benefits if you have plenty of room and are willing to wash the sump. Soap scum smells after a while. The filter gets cleaned once a week when we are living onboard and that is a simple task.

Good luck!
