On my Catalina 350 I discovered my shower drain is pumped to a through hull below the water line which of coarse needs a valve. To me it would make more sense to pump it above the water line. What am I not seeing here?

You are correct. Above the waterline IS better... less complex and one less seacock. The scum and water shooting out the side are only issues for marina queens; boats that spend 90% of the time in marinas.

I stand corrected, it's not an issue for REAL sailors, just us marina queens.

As I slowly rebuild my 27 and having added a shower sump to handle ice box and galley sink drainage I think I still disagree. Below the waterline should still be preferred.

For most installations where you have a discharge near the waterline a seacock is still advisable. Consider back-flow on a hard heel. Consider it a hole in the hull that could be below the waterline in a sinking event.

You have a pump anyway with the sump right? You have a hole in the boat right? Vented loop?

All systems in front of the hole in the boat don't care. The hole in the boat should have a means of closing it.

You might as well save the cosmetic maintenance issue. I for one don't want a hair-ball hanging out of a hole in the boat where others could see it, marina queen or not. I think Catalina made the right choice.

The C36 takes the output from the shower sump up to the sink drain line (above the water line to make a siphon break) and down to a closeable through hull below the water line. The vented loop above the water line and the closed through hull while sailing are both important.
