Should there be any movement in the fiberglass of the transom when lifting the outboard of a 22'

We are looking at a 1978 22'. I saw a little wiggle of the mount itself when it was being lowered into running position while standing in our smaller boat rafted along side. From that angle the 'give' seemed strickly mechanical in nature ~ the actual surface of the transom not visble to me. When the owner brought up however, my husband was watching as he stood near it in the cockpit, looking down. He thought he saw 'give' in the fiberglass around the motor mount as if there was a laminate or rotting issue lurking underneath and or behind the mount. Neither of us noticed any stress cracks, blisters or other outward signs of trouble. As we like the boat and want to offer to her, we need to put this concern behind us before we proceed. We hope to go take a closer look at this mount and what it does when being lowered and raised. When we go to do this, is any give in the transom OK or does any softness indicate a problem?

Transom on my 78 Oday 22

I bought my 22 a couple of years ago and noticed flex in my transom. My boat had a plywood backer on the interior of the starboard side of the transom and this had rotted. I was told that this is fairly common on Odays. Fixing it was a pain in the butt, but was not that hard or expensive. The worst part is crawling around in the cockpit locker. I just removed the outboard bracket and all the rudder hardware, then used a dremel tool to cut the inside skin of fiberglass around the plywood inside the transom.I dug out all the old rotten plywood. Next I cut a new piece of exterior grade plywood and glassed it to the inside of the transom. I added an extra piece of plywood as a backer for the motor mount and bolted that back on. Since all the work was inside the cockpit locker my amateur work doesn't show, and now I can hang on the outboard bracket with no give. If you have to do this I recommend checking out the cockpit drain hose as well. If it is the original hose it needs replacing too. I found a radiator hose at the auto parts store that matched the bend perfectly and put on new hose clamps and thruhull.
In the long run I'm glad I did the project because now I know that all the fittings on the transom are strong and are well bedded.

Wow...!

Dear "JackJ",

That is exactly the kind of inside knowledge I was looking for. Complete with a solution.

Thank you, thank you, thank you!

you might do a search on this topic as there was a thread short while ago about this problem from a boat owner whose transom failled from the motor torque. some posts suggested extending the fiberglass around the courners onto the side of the hull to tie it in for added strength. this sounded like a good idea, especially with the heavier 4 stroke outboards.

i just replaced my cockpit drain on my oday 20. i wasn't able to find a radiator hose, but was able to make the bends with premium marine water hardwall sae j 2006 100-1000-1" id hose. it has wire reinforcement so as to help keep it from collapsing in the bend. just another option if you can't find a rediator hose to fit.
