I have the chance to purchase a 1987 Catalina 30- tall rig, full 5'3" draft that has been on the hard for 10 years. Needs lots of cosmetic work. Main problem seems to be Keel to Hull fitting-1/4" gap at front, showing. Don't know about engine yet. Is fixing the Keel to Hull a big job? (reasonably handy with glass). Are there any things I should look for with a boat that thas been out of the water so long?

Catalina Smile

Look in the archives under "Catalina Smile" very common thing with catalina's usually not a big problem that comes back often. Recently purchased an '84 Cat 30 that was well maintained and had the same problem. Lot of discussion on it as it is common.

Get a good survey

I purchased an 89 Cat 30 last October. I have been very happy with it. Catalina made several good changes beginning in 89: T cockpit, aluminum spreaders and improvements to the interior. You didn't say what the asking price for this vessel is. I would think mid twenties is about right, assuming the survey turns up no significant problems. Chip s/v No Ma'am Lake Norman, NC

second part of the question-

The second part of my question- is there anything I should look out for? The boat has been up on stands for 10yrs, in the open. The lines/sheets are all mouldy(best way to clean them?) but the sails have been stored and are ok. Can I test the engine out of the water?

Stu,

What we need on this forum is a permanent notice for people to check with the respective association websites. I bet it would save you hours of typing :)

Jon...I suggested that to the webmaster...he's afraid it would drive people away from this forum and does not want to do it.

Yes, can run engine out of water

I rig-up a 'T' system, which allows me to connect a standard garden hose to the 1st side, the removed raw-water hose from the strainer to the 2nd side, and the 3rd side via an extra hose, back to the strainer to 'back flush' the strainer, but more importantly to reduce the water pressure to the engine so as to not harm the raw-water impeller. Remember if the engine's raw-water system was winterized, it will need to be re-winterized. Hope this helps..
