Hello all. I am about 5 years away from retiring and I am trying to figure out what exactly would be fun to do and I think I have come up with a pretty good idea. I live up in Canada where the winters are 6 months of the year and lately its been like minus 40 for a few weeks now. My plan consists of staying up here in the summer and going to somewhere warm in the winter but the twist for me is I want to buy a Hunter 340 and sail around the Bahamas, Cuba, Jamaica, etc for months while its freezing cold up here. Last year I just got into sailing and I am loving it. I bought a Mac Gregor 26X and used it all last summer up north in the large lakes but now I have the sailing bug and I don't want to just sit around while there is 4 feet of ice on the water for 6 months. Heres where I need some advice as I am new to sailing. 1.) Is a 1999 Hunter 340 a good vessel and Ocean ready for such a voyage? 2.) I have 5 years to get ready to go and sail a 340 for months down south. What do I have to learn by then and I am thinking tides, weather patterns, RF radios , etc just to begin with. 3.) Where does one get all of that information from ?
If you guys could help me out I'd be very grateful
