Should I buy this O'Day 22?

Greetings,I am looking for a trailerable boat (22-26)and have found a 1987 O'Day that has been out of the water for several years. It has a trailer and 18hp outboard. The interior is ruined by milldew, that's ok, I can work through that. The seller will probably take $1,250-1,500. I have several questions. Should there be ballast, like lead bars in here somewhere? Is a 18hp engine too big? (I have an Evenrude 25 long shaft I could also use, but it weighs about 100lb and I thought this would be too much.) The boat has brand new sails, that's a blessing (just a jib and mainsail). There is a little damage to the bottom of the boat, I asume I can patch this just like the holes I've fixed in my Sailfish. Can you think of anything I should be looking for or asking? (The current owner/seller is not a sailor and never sailed this boat)Thank you for any thoughts you might have,Chris

The "more fun" tab on this web site has a section on O'day Documentation and a very complete description of the O'day 22. Should answer many of your questions. The outboard is way over kill. I use an 8HP Johnson longshaft with an alternator on my 23 and it is plenty even in the six knot current that runs under the bridge to Fall River from Portsmouth. Price sounds fair for a "project boat". Is a trailer included? If yes you can't go too far wrong at that price. If no and you are going to want one be prepared for a search if you want used or for sticker shock if you buy new. (around $3500.00)Regards,John

1986 Oday 222

I have an Oday 222 (1986) and we love it. Th emildew problem can be fix but upholstery can be really costly - check it out.I have a 5HP Honda and its plenty - 18 HP is over kill and it will probably affect the boat's performance under sail.If this boat is the same as mine, the ballast is in the keel (about 15") which is also the housing for the centerboard.
