Should I buy a MACK PACK?

I am contemplating purchasing a MACK PACK from Mack Sails. Has anyone had any positive/negitive experience with it? It's about $540 for a Hunter 340. Is the time and trouble to furl and cover with the conventional sail cover worth the $540 or is this luxury? It takes me about twenty minutes to furl and cover the main after dropping it. Any comments would be appreciated. Thanks, Wynn Ferrel S/V Tranquility

Got a sewing machine?

Just went to the Mack Sails site to read up on the Mack Pack (never heard of it before) and discovered the following: 1. If you're the do-it-yourself type, it appears you could make the whole sail cover for about $65 (Sunbrella $20, Zipper $30, Fittings $15) 2. The Harken Lazy Jack system is available almost anywhere around $180 for a 34' boat. 1+2. Total DIY price: Less than $250? 3. Won't the zipper chafe the sail? 4. If you roll down the Mack Pack to keep the zipper off the sail and tie it to the boom, isn't that more trouble than a sail cover? 5. If you remove the forward end fitting from the mast, you will have to furl/roll the cover to keep it from banging on the mast under sail; unless, of course, you don't mind the banging. Suggestion: Actually time yourself from sail down to cover on. I am betting you will find it takes far less than 20 minutes. On the other hand, nifty rigs are cool, too! But for $540 I would buy, oh, a GPS, or a sextant, or refridgeration, or another set of custom berth sheets, or a used spinnaker, or, well, you get the idea. Let us know what you decide!

Limited Experience

Some of Moorings Charter Boats (Martinique) are fitted with such. On the cruise we normally dropped the the Beneteau 405 sails into it without problems and with great ease. It works easily and the zipper apparently had no negative effect on the sail that we could see. There were clips to close the "unit" together so that one did not have to zip it each time. We did not fold the unit down our failure to not to do so did not seem to present any problems. It did not affect the sail trim adversely. It is a little like the arch: until you get used to it, it doesn't seem quite right. BTW, I can flake and tarp my 340 main in about 10 minutes, but then I am probably lying <grin>. Jim

Give Hunter a try

Hunter now uses a stackpack type cover for it's new line. I'm sure they's sell it to you if it's avaiable for your model. call customer service and ask them to price one out for you. It's gonna be a lot cheaper and a stack pack. BTW UK sails also makes one too, called the lazy cradle I believe. carol Donovan in Calif has one on her 410 and has sent pics and comments. in. She loves it. Haven't got the Hunter system in yet, but I have till april to install it. :-( Happy Holidays Bob Knott
