Short Ocean Passages

I know that folks take C22's in the ocean. What about short passages like Florida to the Islands and then some island hopping. Is this doable by semi-sane people in an 85 C22 fin keel? If so, what modifications or additions would be required? Obviously an experienced skipper and a close watch of the weather would be required. I ask because I want to do that type of trip in the future after I have gained more experience. We find the C22 to be an ideal size for the Chesapeake Bay sailing we do now. I really don't want a bigger boat, but have a desire to cruise the US and Canadian East Coasts, and the Bahamas in the future. Pete

Caution is the key

You're right to gain more experience and to wait till you're ready. The boat itself, if its in good condition, should be able to make a trip down the ICW with no problem at all. Hopping over to the Bahamas would be iffy but doable, I'm sure. Sheesh, some guy sailed a Cal 25 (I think?) with blue poly tarps for sails down the coast to Florida! LaDonna

yes, very doable

Pete I often take my 22 MKll fin keel off-shore and have competed in many open ocean races.... Being semi-sane, now thats another question, I plan on doing the singlehanded transpac in my 22 if I can figure out how to get 16 days of stores aboard... I have gone through many upgrades on the boat, including foaming between the inter and outer hulls, upgradeing of the standing and running rigging...retro fit of the C250 deep design rudder, all lines are lead aft across the cabin top with cabin top winches and tracksand many other small upgrades..As for the size of the boat....The 22 handles the wave action better than a larger boat in my openion....Pick your weather right and sail the high preasure areas if wind will allow.... And probably most important, find someone that has done the trip before and pick thier brain apart...Theres nothing like experence to show you the right way....

Farallones Fancy - An ocean voyage

I'm planning an adventure sail with my C-22 for Spring '02 and I'd like to check-in with sailors who have been there before. The plan is to pick a good weather window in Mar or April, charge out under the GG Bridge and circumnavigate the Farallones Islands. I've been sailing the SF Bay Area a bit this year and the boat's pretty well equipt and in good shape. What do you guys think? Merry Christmas.
