short davits, fat dink

I'm looking to upgrade to a new dinghy. The 10'ers are about a foot wider than my old dink. My current davit arms center on the old dink so with the new one they'll be about 4" to 6" short of center.

Anyone ever deal with this? How did it work out? I may have to have extensions welded on, hoping not. We full time cruise so we'll have to plan that into our travels.

I would contact the manufacturer of the davits and ask what their design considerations were for dink dimensions and hoisting connections. Simply extending the arms may cause loads in excess of design.

Remember your phsics lessons. The longer the arm, the less it can lift. I'd check with the davit manufacurer on the lifting specifications. The other option is to have a reputable rig shop build a slingthat will compenaste for the offset.

Knowing what I know about this davit and many other davits, I'm not concerned about the weight issue.

I'm concerned about how the dink will lift/ride with this offset.

This is on the endeavor 40 right?? Had some friends who have owned this model boat very nice! You are very lucky....Don't you want to secure your dingy up against the transom anyway .... So as keep dingy from swinging around while under way. In my situation I place two small fenders between dingy and transom to avoid chafe then I snug her in tight to back of boat. My dingy has Davis dingy brackets professionally attached to the side of my Caribe 10 so they make for a very secure place to hook a line too. Which makes is easy too suck dingy up against the base of my stern railing.

I do like keeping our current dink pulled tight to the davit. The new bigger dink will 'fight'me to some unknown degree being "too wide".

I'm thinking I can make the stern bridle offset to compensate somewhat for short arms. The 6:1 rig will end up at an angle sternward when the dink is hauled up.

I'm hoping to hear from someone who faced this to give me some insight into any gotchas I might not be thinking of.

Alls well that ends well. Despite being over a foot wider, there is no appreciable difference in hauling the larger dink up on the short arms. Longer arms would definitely be nicer for my setup but this is working OK.

And the new dinghy is great!
