Shorepower 10' rule

I am planning to replace the shorepower installation on our boat (Hunter 33 1981). The distribution panel looks like it is going to be > 10' from the shorepower inlet, so i need to install a double pole circuit breaker. I am not sure where to put this, all the ones i have seen look like they need to be fitted to a panel and i would rather avoid the expense of buying 2 panels. Are there any standalone breakers that are simple to install?

You need a Blue Sea 3131 not the 1331..

Factory install

That is what I have after the shore power plug in and before the main
panel from the factory on my 2007 H-36.

Trying to find out weather or not the breaker in the picture with the LEDS is worth the money to indicate a reverse polarity. Have it on the main panel. Have the benefit of planning ahead for the shorepower plug might install it less than 10 feet but it could be more

If it's more than ten feet, put bigger wires on it. If the American Yacht council or whoever looks at it then bribe them. It works for everybody else..

We are talking about the 120V AC feed. 10GA wire is what is normally used for a 30A service. If you want less voltage drop in that AC circuit the best place to shorten wire is to use a 25' shore power cord as opposed to a 50 footer with 35' coiled on the dock.. Still no 30A service should get loaded beyond 80% for continuos duty..

You can always go larger GA but it is not necessary for 10'. It also may confuse someone in the future who may wind up with a 50A main breaker, based on wire GA.

No need for reverse polarity at the inlet. It goes in/at the panel where it can be seen. Probably 95% of the 10' rule breakers never get touched let alone looked at.....

Thanks for all comments and the links to the projects - very informative. One further question, what size wire should i use from the main breaker panel to the GFCI protected outlets? There will be 2 outlets port side, 2 outlets starboard side from 2 x 15A breakers in the main panel. Run approx 10' either side.

#14/3 conductor will work but if you chose you can use #12/3 conductor

#14 is rated for 15 amps ac and #12 is rated for 20 amps ac...
