Can I use shore power with a battery in place? Will I harm any of the systems or charger?

Your battery should not even be in the AC circuit, I wouldn't worry.

Realize that your 12V systems will be inoperative, like some units of refrigeration, lights, bilge pump, water pumps, radios etc. Basically you will just have availability of your 120V outlets. If your question pertains to a live aboard situation there are converters available which could power your 12V fixtures and appliances. Luckily beside the outlets you could have hot water if so equipped.

I was down at the boat today messing about with the electrical system. That is exactly what happened. 120v but no DC. After connecting the starter battery all DC up and running. I had a trailer at one time that would convert 120v to 12v dc without the battery but I am assuming it must be different type of charger/converter as you say. Thanks for the information.

I would be careful about running the DC systems right off a battery charging system with no battery present. The battery(s) will serve to both smooth out the output from the charging system and absorb excess voltage and spikes that may otherwise damage your electronics. Without the batteries there is no protection against whatever the charger puts out.
