my hunter 30 is finally in the water When I plug into shore power all is well until I turn anything on in the boat, then I get a very loud buzz - no power

Check for loose wiring...

buzz sound associated with electrical system is usually bad news. It starts as a buzz and could end up overheating, burnt contacts/wire termination and fire.

I agree with Ken,

Sounds like a bad connection or, if you have one, the Isolation Transformer is bad. When you connect a load the current drain drops the EMF (voltage) accoss the problem therefore the buss and no power. Get a meter and find out where the voltage drop is largest. It could also be your shore power drop. Test to see if the marina's power is good!

After checking that the shore power source is good, check the pwoer cord. A common problem is moisture and /or corrosion build up on the male receptacle on the boat. This creates resistance which will melt the wires behind it. See if you can see behind it. You may also smell burnt plastic. If this is the case, it is not that difficult to replace depending on the access. Good luck. SH

Reversed Polarity

If your boat is not equiped with an isolation transformer, the sound probably indicates reversed polarity.

dito drversed polarity

You should have a light near the main AC breaker that says, "Reverse polarity, remove shore power cable". There should also be a "check lamps" button. Your hot is neutral and your neutral is hot at the dock In a house it does not matter as you have both "legs" of the 220 volt service. In a boat you have only one leg and you have to get the hot and neutral polarity right
