Hunter 23.5 Melvern Lake
Have had 1 full season with our Hunter 23.5 (1993) and am trying to properly understand and operate the electrical panel/shore power (30A/125V Locking). The previous boats I've owned did not have shore power so I dont' have the experience. Specifically, I want to understand how and what I should and shouldn't be doing while using shore power. It appears to be a fairly straightforward setup, but thought I'd ask the 'experts' on this site for an overview.

I'm a little leary of leaving the battery charger 'on' while I'm not on the boat. It is my understanding that battery charging fumes can build up in enclosed spaces and cause serious problems (boom!).

Any advice is appreciated.

I installed shore power on our H240 3 years ago. We've kept her in a slip all summer for 3 years with the trickle charger always plugged in. No problems with fumes at all. But, I do unplug the charger when sleeping aboard JIC.

One key lesson I recall from my course on coastal chartering is, always plug the cord into the boat first, then into the shore power receptacle (and vice versa). You should never carry the cord with a hot end.

I would love to see some pictures of your shore power installations. My boat doesn't have it and I'd liike to install it this winter along with some other upgrades I have in mind. Thanks

Kevin

Thanks for the info regarding the trickle charger and plugging the cord into the boat first.

Kev~I'll takes some pics and post them.

To build on my earlier posts...It is my undestanding that I have two panels on board one that controls the shore power and one that controls the battery (I think). Is that a correct assumption as far as a standard setup? The electronics onboard appear to be OEM from hunter.
