Shore Power Hookup

I'm curious to see if anyone has added a shore power hookup to a 23.5. The marina has power available and it would be nice to be able to charge the battery while docked.

It is On My List

Right now I just run the power cord over the top of the hatch boards.

15 amp added to h26

A knowledgable friend of mine and myself, a successful tool hander, added a 15 amp system to my Hunter 26 a couple of years ago. We included a self-monitoring battery charger and two AC outlets in the cabin -- one facing the aft berth and the second out of the locker on the starboard side. The "inlet" from the outside is on the port side, into the battery compartment with proper breakers, etc. Wires to the interior outlets run under the floor of the berth area. It's been very helpful to have shore power, even if only 15 amps. Handles interior cooling -- a carry-on air conditioner successfully. Marv Otto S/V Kobold Goldemar Hunter 26

I have shore power connections

I installed shore power this summer. I did not want to run the power cord through the hatch any more. I mounted the shore power mount on the rear transom inside the cockpit below the tiller and ran marine grade wire under the aft bunk. I mounted a circuit breaker panel in the battery compartment along with a AC outlet for the battery charger. Then mounted an outlet on the aft Starboard side bench and I also mounted one by the sink on the port side. It is really nice to connect the shore power and just plug stuff in as needed when below. My wife really like the ability of being to use her blow dryer after she takes a shower at the marina. It was really easy to install and it only took part of one day. It took more time to get all the parts together.

YOu want professiona advice

I will be glad to offer you info what I do but unless you are an electrician or have any knowledge of wiring up, don't do it. You can use a variety of outside plug to include 30 amp/110 volt inlet, 20amp/110 inlet or a plain marinco fitting for a regular electrical chord. I have placed this on the 23.5 and 240 in such a way not to interfere with the main salon or cock pit. I even have placed the hookup in the cockpit locker and the shore power chord will exit at the handle area with the lid down. When wiring, you need to know the circuit you are attaching to at the dock is wired correctly; otherwise, it could lead to electrocution. I stongly suggest that you put in a panel with polarity. If the red light ever comes on, disconnect fast as the dock again is wired up wrong. I lost a friend years ago as a result of faulty wiring at a resort. You also need to add a GFI. I can find one at Lowes with a 20 amp service but you have to look for it as most are for 15 amp. Also, you need to use marine grade wiring as it is easier to work with and it is doubly insulated. Remmeber black is hot, white is neutral and of course green is ground. Also secure all wiring and make sure that there is a cover plate behind the wiring. Crazy Dave Condon

Done

I agree with Crazy Dave. My installation is done as he discribes. I forgot to state that at the sink I have a GCFI outlet. I have worked as an electrian and done numeroud wiring jobs. I would not recommend to anyone to just go nuts installing wiring without experience.
