Steve, they are so cheap on ebay, why bother?

Clean them bright

I have gone through both the white and the yellow versions. I clean them at the beginning of the season with a white wall cleaner found in most discount or auto stores. takes a few minutes, but they come out nice and clean to start the season. Unless you can get a new cord for $5.00 this is definitely the cheaper way to go. Happy Sailing

I have used

Island girl pink with good results, I use Island Girl to seal them after cleaning, they usually stay clean all summer.

Acitone

Buy a gallon of the cheapest aectone at Home Depot or any hardware store. Use outside with throw away rag and very good rubber gloves. DO NOT SMOKE during this process. This will clean off the darkest residue. Might need to do several times for the worst spots if you let the cord hit the water. Let dry outside as overuse may make the cord soft but will come back after dry. cheap at half the price. Re-hang with garden hose hanger to keep the excess cord out of the water.

I wouldn't use acetone...

Or any petroleum based solvent. The immediate results may be good, but acetone and petroleum attacks the rubber sheathing, causing it not only to deteriorate, but also attract dirt again much faster. (Btw, this also applies to fenders.) Don't use any abrasive cleanser (Soft Scrub etc) either...it'll leave minute scratches that'll turn the cord into a dirt magnet. Soak it in a pail or pan of strong detergent/water solution overnight, then scrub with a soft brush and rinse very thoroughly. Btw...cleaning 'em more often requires less work and gets better results than waiting till they're totally black...which isn't good for 'em either.
