Shore power cord

My shore power cord that came with the boat is pretty gummy. I have tried using Goo Begone with a Brillo pad and it has helped some but it still is not where I would like it to be. Does anybody have any suggestions for what might cut through the stickiness?

Have you tried acetone?

I thought about acetone but I did not know if it would do anything damaging to the the rubber of the cord.

I think acetone will soften the rubber. And it would probably take alot of it if his cord looks like so maky i see on the docks. That cleaner has a UV block also. Maybe just some 409 or similar and elbow grease with a scrubbing pad?

We use acetone all of the time to clean power and phone cords and it also works well for fenders. The acetone evaporates rather quickly. A good protectant to help maintain it goes a long way. Chuck

Sometimes yes and sometimes no. You can try the least toxic first and then if it does not work, try the next. I can say we have tried every cleaner imaginable for both cords and fenders. Once it gets the sticky film, you will probably have to bring out the big guns. Chuck

harsh chemicals and sunshine make stickiness on rubber--most of the time is the rubber itself, as with fenders. i store all the rubber items below decks in a self contained area not anywhere near the human habitat. stickiness in rubber fenders is cleanable by replacement. good luck with the shore power cord.~~~~~_/)~~~~~

Mary kate spray and a stiff brush

I used Mary kate spray and a stiff brush after my power cord got really gummed up post Hurricane Isabel .Worked fine. Spray on wait a few minutes and scrub it cleans up nicely and will not adversely impact the cord. SOme have suggested repalcement but on the bay you might do it yearly if you are really fussy. Take a few minutes scrub it If you have enough slack to provide for the tide it is going to dangle in the water from time to time during the day. Clean it while the goo is wet. Once it dries twice as tuff
