i'd like to know where to begin to convert a standard 1973 cat 27 for shore power. any advice would be very useful and helpful. i'm fairly inexperienced with electronics, but i'm also pretty handy in general. is this something i should leave to the pros and if so, how much would something like this cost.

Nigel Calder's book "Boatowners Electrical Manual" or something to that effect would be a great help to you. If you're inexperienced, you might think about hiring someone to do it with you there so you can watch what he's doing

I did mine

I did mine, but I'd had a lot of experience in remodeling my house which involved moving and adding outlets. Setting your boat up for shore power isn't a lot different. It's not that difficult or complex, but you need to be very careful and not cut corners. I'd suggest that you get a more experienced friend to help you out. Some key points: 1. Don't skimp on hardware, particularly the shore power connector. 2. Use the proper wire guage. Make sure it's marine wire. 3. Use GFI outlets. 4. Make double sure that your polarity is correct.
