Well, I pulled my injectors for the MD6A this weekend. By chance, I struck up a conversation with this guy and he turned out to be a marine diesel mechanic.

He took a quick look at my engine and determined that it didn't sound right. He took his finger and placed it on the top of the engine near the injector sites. Only one side was getting a hot spot (you have to do this from a cold start). He says I am only running on half an engine. I had no idea because I don't know what these engines are supposed to sound like. I just bought the boat.

I quickly pulled the injectors. They are all black and charred looking on the ends.

Anybody know of a shop that specialises in injector cleaning/rebuild in the maryland area?

Thanks,
gh

If you are only firing on one cylinder could be any one of a number of
problems.

Injector
Injector pump
Compression in that cylinder

Thanks for the input Steve.br
I did hand crank the flywheel while the injectors were disconnected and did see alternate squirts from the pump... for what it's worth.brbr

I just now looked at the injectors under a microscope and on one I can see two pin holes on the end. Lot's of black on the end.brbr

On the other, It is completely coated and I can't see any holes.brbr

If anyone is interested the part number for the injectors is
KBAL70P1/4 225, made in Germanybrbr

My motor is from a 1973 Vega #1813 with MD6A.brbr

HiIf I remember correctly there is a copper sleeve and no washer when you
install. May be wrong but please check. You can download the workshop
manual from the Website if in doubt.

I took my injectors to be rebuilt. It was recomended that I buy new
which I did. Cost was $189. Ran much better after that.

I brought my injectors in to a diesel specialist (not marine but
overhauling heavy goods vehicle engines).

Cost about Euro 100 - engine now has much more power - previously I
couldnt start engine with alternator field line connected due to lack of
power!

Now no problem tho I still have a switch that allows me to start engine
with field line disconnected then flick switch a few seconds after engine
starts to start charging battery.

The ssytem is probably woth keeping for cold starting in winter.

I mean to replace the toggle switch with a push-to-break setup uing a
relay to turn a push-to-make switch into ptb.John
