I'm in the market to get all new instruments...depth, speed, wind. Does anyone out there know of a site that will help me compare features/functions? I don't need anything fancy, just the basics for this day sailor. I'd prefer ones that can be mounted on the pedestal vs. the ones I have that are thru the fiberglass....thanks! *o

Just some food for thought. Instruments mounted at the wheel are very hard to see if you are steering the boat from the rail. They are much easier to read from that steering position if they are mounted in the cockpit bulkhead. If you steer the boat from the stand up position directly at the wheel you should be able to see the instruments from either position.

ST60

I just bought and am in the process of installing ST60 wind/depth/speed package I am mounting the in a navpod pedestal type pod but i am mounting it above the companion way for better viewing and access. The common method of having them on the pedestal is too restrictive and inconvienent and I dont like having to look down while sailing. The new transducers are slightly larger in diameter then the origional Signet equipment. It is always easier to enlarge a hole than to reduce it!

Mounted over the companionway.

Corrine: There are many installation methods available. One that interests me would be to mount them over the companionway (under our dodger). This allows you to see them from just about any place in the cockpit. It makes it really nice if you are using an autopilot and have a dodger. This allows you to stay out of the weather and still see your instruments. Be sure that you find instruments that are easy to see in bright sun. Some units are much better than others in this respect. As far as the brands available there are many. Raymarine, Navman, Nexus, B&G. The other thing you may want to consider if a system with a CPU so the instruments are integrated. You need to find your budget point and then start looking for what is available in your price range. If you don't care about integration West Marine stuff is fine.

ST60?

John, who makes the ST60? I have an old Signet combo unit that only the depth sounder is working on. Knotmeter needs a transducer, but don't know if anything currently made would be compatible.

ST60 is Raymarine.

Once Raytheon, now Raymarine, the ST series is probably the most common. I have Nexus mounted at the pedestal. A very nice system with everything easily integrated. I bought it before there was Navman. I would look closely at Navman. Try "PYacht", Performance Yacht, as a way to compare using their manufacturer's index(Related Link). Then shop all the online chandleries. Incidentally, my 1979 Signet instruments are still working well. You could contact them about fixing your current ones(www.signetmarine.com).

ST60 SWD over companionway

If I did this right, the link below should take you to a picture of our Speed/Wind/Depth Nav Instruments mounted over the companionway. It's a great place for them, as everyone in the cockpit can see them. Jack "Friendship" C350, #80

Thanks, Guys!

I will contact Signet about a compatible transducer for my current display. I have a C25, so mounting above the companionway prob won't work, but I'd prefer not to have to cut any more holes.

Nice looking lady, where are the instruments?

Jack: That is a nice setup. Did you have the mounting bar custom made or was it an off the shelf unit. This is exactly what I want to do with my Nexus instruments. The only down side is if you want to change a setting on a display, but if I get a few extra displays, that will not be much of an issue. Do you have a soft liner to run you wires? through?

Steve...

The Stainless Steel bar was custom made locally at the direction of my marina. They used PVC pipe to make a mockup, and then took that to the machine shop to be used as a model. The headliner has an access port above the galley (thank you Catalina!). This came in handy to run the wires. The Catalina 350 website used to have pictures of my setup, but they seem to be missing lately. If you're interested, I would be happy to send you some detailed pictures of the Stainless Steel bar. Jack "Friendship" C350, #80 P.S. As regards the nice looking lady, I agree. :)

Jack Looks great ! If I redid my instruments

That is definitely where I would mount them. There are times when I am tweeking the sails or something and I can't easily see if its affecting my boat speed without going back behind the helm. Do you have other pics? Was that a custom made piece of Stainless Steel bar or something you got from Catalina? Did you route the wires through the SS bar? How did you route the seatalk up there? Through the liner?

Tom S...

Yes, it was a custom made Stainless Steel bar. And yes, the wires are routed thru the SS bar. I'm at work now and don't have access to the other pictures. When I get home tonight, I'll try to post them here, or try to find out why they are no longer on the C350 website. Jack "Friendship" C350, #80

Access to Electric Winch location

The 350 has a removable panel above the galley - starboard side - for access below the cabintop winch. I believe the access is there for installing an electric halyard winch. As such, there should be easy access to a wiring run. Jack - Did Catalina pre-install any wires to that location for the the optional winch? Did you have to fish the SEATALK wire to that location? Tim...

My marina did the work, so I am unsure if there were any wires (power?) already in the access panel area. It would be easy to remove the screws and have a look though. When I talked with the technician about the installation, he said it was easy to get the SeaTalk wires to the access panel area. I don't recall if he used an electrician's fish tape. Seatalk should be pretty easy

It only takes 3 smallish wires (22 guage?) to feed all those ST60 intruments, because after you connect the first one up, all you need to do is daisy-chain the rest.

Corinne, I chose Navman over Raymarine.

I just bought new instruments. I chose Navman over Raymarine because of price and because of Raymarines proprietary system. Raymarine requires you to buy a NMEA interface/translator buss if you want to share data with other intruments. Navman outputs straight NMEA 183 which I can interface directly to my GPS and Autopilot without having to buy an translator. thanks.. Ted

Tom S... more pictures

Tom S, This is a picture showing the Port and Starboard sides of the SS bar. Sorry, but I do not have a picture of the backside of the NavPod. Jack "Friendship" C350, #80
