I purchased this boat late last summer and haven't even sailed her yet. I'm thinking now after reading on the forums, I should have shopped around for a fin keel.My last boat was an older MacGregor with a swing keel. I'm concerned mostly with stability in waters like Buzzards Bay and Vineyard Sounds.I've sailed these waters on a 27 Catalina with a fin keel which gave quite a tipsy topsy ride!I don't plan on ever racing but I would like my sailing experiences with her to be enjoyable and pleasant.

Don't think its a problem.
Lyn: I don't think you are going to find the stability with the shoal keel the problem. I think you are only going to find that they just don't point as well. Don't think you can compare the Cat and the Mac to the H'27.

I agree with Steve. You will get more stability by easing the sheets or taking in a reef. Enjoy the pleasures of flat, fast sailing. Bob S/V Lady Di II P.S. If it makes you feel better, shoal draft boats have heavier ballast/keels than deep fin keel boats.

Twelve sailors-sixteen opinions. Steve is right, they do not sail to close and there may be a bit more leeway. You will find, however, they are most efficient with the toerail well above the water. The H27 is not for racing, it is a comfortable weekend boat. If that is your purpose you should be well satisfied.

No problem on lake erie
I would not call our shoal draft h27 tender in the 3-5 foot waves we have experienced on Lake Erie. Response to more powerful wind is gradual - due to the substantial weight in the keel. My Admiral ("please don't go above 15 degrees") is quite happy if I reef on time - and the Lady Lillie performs better on her feet.

Love the freedom
After a swing keel Starwind I love the freedom of the shoal draft keel. At 3'3" I get a lot of places other boats can't and don't have to pick my way around. As for stability, just don't try and over power the boat. Reef early, more to be comfortable than safe.

what happens to fin keels when aground?
I have managed to find the bottom often enough with a "shoal" draft H27-1979. doesn't seem to bother that thick piece of lead! What happens to a fin keel? does it bend? Just a dumb question from a novice.
