Sailing is a lot like driving a stick shift car. Road conditions, traffic and weather can cause you to shift up or down. It is the same with sailing – the wind speed and direction plus the wave condition are ever changing. What this means is that if you want to get 100% efficiency from your sail boat you have to “shift your sail trim gears” to compensate for the ever changing conditions. In other words, you just can’t set the trim and forget it. So what adjustments can we make to compensate for the ever changing conditions? One adjustment we can make is steering. You can head up or fall off and see how that movement affects the efficiency of the boat but that only gets you so far. You can also adjust the heel angle by simply moving the crew inboard or outboard. The most important thing you can do is adjust the shape of your sails. This is a bit more complicated but once you understand the function of each sail trim control for the main and jib, this becomes a simple matter. Additionally, you have to know what sail shape is required for each wind speed and point of sail, but we’ll get into that later. Understanding the function of the sail trim controls for the main and jib is the heart of the matter, so lets talk about the function of some of these sail trim controls. Outhaul – this sail trim control induces or reduces draft depth (belly) into the mainsail. It controls the sail shape of the lower 2/3 of the mainsail. Boom Vang - this sail trim control is used to control leech tension. Without it the boom will rise and the mainsail will luff. The amount of tension you apply on the vang depends on the wind sea conditions. Cunningham – this sail trim control performs the same function as the halyard but is easier to use. Its function is to move the draft position forward and aft, again depending on conditions. Jib Halyard – performs the same function as the Cunningham except on the jib. Backstay – its main function is to flatten the mainsail. Fairleads – the absolute most important sail trim control for the jib. The fairleads are used to adjust draft depth, draft position , twist and angle of attack. Traveler – controls angle of attack. Mainsheet and jib sheet – they are used to shape the sails. The above is just a brief outline of the function of the sail trim controls but it is all you’ll need to know to follow this thread. Shifting Gears

Don, One gear that you forgot to mention, and a great many sailors don't think about is the sails themselves. Primarily the genoas, though this can also apply to the main. One genoa is one gear. Different cuts and weights of sails are also very important to the conditions(multiple gears). A heavy weight #3 or #4 will not sail very well in light air and flat seas. Likewise, a large light #1 will not do well in 25+ knots and a chop. Selecting the right "gear" is as important as selecting the right trim controls.

Don, No matter how much main halyard tension I apply, I can't eliminate wrinkles in my main. They run at an almost 45-degree angle to the mast, growing to be parallel to the boom. If I ease the tension, they get. Outhaul doesn't help, nor does vang. If I take my hand and push on the windward side, just above the boom, they get much better. It is a full batten main with a Dutchman flaking system...Any ideas? Thanks much.

Harry: My first thought was to have a sail maker in your area take a look at it but before I did that I'd try a couple of things. I could understand it if you had partial battens but the full battens should eliminate most of the problem you described. I'm sure the sail was designed for your C30 - right? Anyway, you can do all of this at the dock and it will take about 5 minutes. First I'd crank on the halyard. Then I'd rig a Cunningham (you should have one anyway). The cunningham stretches the luff and in addition it pulls cloth from the middle of the sail. Then crank on the outhaul. It pulls the foot of the sail and the bottom 2/3 of the sail. It also pulls cloth from the middle of the sail. Next crank on the boom vang. To picture in your mind what the boom vang is doing you should visualize you are standing on the dock looking at the starboard side of your main sail. Now picture a BIG clock right in the middle of the sail. The pulling force goes from about 10:00 on the leech down to about 4:00 on the foot. Lastly, you should crank on the mainsheet. After you have doone all that, take a look at the sail. If the wrinkles are still there - contact the sail maker because there is nothing more you can do with your sail trim controls to correct the problem. As a point of info - Garhauer Marine make a neat rigid vang that works great on Catalinas or any boat for that matter.
