Shipping Boat Toronto to Florida

Rather than sailing my 35' sailboat from Toronto to the Caribbean, I'm thinking it may be cheaper to ship it to Florida (probably Miami) and sail from there. Has anyone done this? If so how much did it cost? How about from the northern states, anyone shipped to Florida from there?

Cheaper?

Figure around $3000. for the transport. But how much is your time worth? Preparing the boat and then recommissioning on the other end could exceed the transportation cost. This, of course, depends upon how much work you can do yourself and the marina that handles the launch. And transporting a boat is very hard on many of the components, especially rigging. My personal opinion is that it is better to either sail it yourself or have it delivered on the water.

Overland harder ?

The AICW trip (Toronto - Miami) is something on the order of 2,000 miles, and may take as long as 2 months. You can expect to put 100's of hours on the engine (& up to $2K in fuel costs). The trip South can be a great cruise, in and of itself. However, if time is of the essence, or you don’t care to see (much of) the Atlantic Seaboard (why not?) - then I’d certainly consider the overland transport alternative.

Curious about being hard on the rigging>>?????

If your transporting it via highways and byways, isn't your rigging along with the mast all taken down?? Was just wondering why that would be hard on the rigging? Again, just curious..thnx

Who by?

Is that quote from a shipper that specializes in moving boats or just a standard freight shipper/trucker? Does that include loading and unloading costs? I am giving consideration to shipping a 37 footer a similar distance (but out to the west coast), the price you indicated makes the idea more attractive.

Loading and Unloading is not included.

Echo Gulf I forgot to tell you that the unloading and loading is not included. You have to arrange that with the marina at both ends. Most of the shippers only allow two hours for this and charge by the hour (around $55) for extra time.
