shipping a boat

I have a new 326 in Mystic CT, love the boat by the way, but may need to send it to my other home in Savannah GA. What sould I do - am hesitant to sail it there as it would be at the end of the summer prime hurricane weather down the coast - is a truck the way to go and if so, what about preping the boat and who should I get to re-rig it? Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks Ed

If it were me and I had the time, I would make a cruise out of it. Its cheaper and more enjoyable. But if time is a factor, you may have to ship it or pay someone to deliver it. As far as hurricanes go, you can't predict what Ma Nature will do, and you could get hit in Mystic just as easy as Savannah, no?

Shipping your boat

I have had two boats move using a boat hauler who has the specialty trailer just for this purpose. You can speak to your marina folks who, I am sure, know of haulers who can do the job for you.You need to know that there is additional cost of unstepping and stepping your mast. Having your boat moved by a hauler can cost upwards to $500 per hour. Your boat was made to travel in the water, not over land. There will be stresses on the boat from the overland move that could cause stress cracks, crasing, in the gel coat.If it were me, I would make a sailing trip out of it or find a delivery captain.

I have a 37.5 in Annapolis that I am thinking of taking up your way later this summer (Aug) for a few weeks. I could arrange to sail your boat back down all/part of the way to Savannah ... particularly if you can help with slip space up there. Email me at dcdon@hotmail.com. No Problem Over the Road

I just had my boat (Hunter 34) shipped to Canada from Mystic CT without a hitch (no Pun). The cost was about $2600 (Canadian). The only problem I had was that most yards in Mystic can not accomodate large haulers. So make sure your hauler talks to the yard about getting the truck into the yard. I've also had a boat trucked from Boothbay Harbor Maine to Mystic for a cost of about $1000 US. No problems whatsoever with the haulers or stress on the boat. Be cautious of legend and folklore about over the perils of road hauling. Get a good reference for the hauler and let them do the rest.Jerry Ketojerry.keto@opg.com

If I ship it I will go the truck route. It would go from Sailing Specialties, a Hunter dealer and as luck would have it they get boats shipped up from Florida often and these trucks go back empty so a decent price should be in the offing and the haulers are bring new boats from Hunter so I assume they are reputable. Ed
