Just before haul out I had a problem with the cable retainer inside the steering pedestal. Edson was very helpful, but I would like to know if anyone has a better idea from an engineering point of view. The fix indicated replacing cables and the retainer if needed, but the job is awkward to do and seems simple to rectify with the correct piece of hardware. Other than a fabricated piece I wonder if ther is something available from common marine hardware that could be used. It is very embarassing to be stuck in gear in a crowded marina.....I don't want to do it again. jk (ocean city NJ)

Go with the Edson Part

I just finished this repair and recommend using the Edson retainer -- I don't know of a comparable part on the market. I had quite a bit of trouble removing the old part as the screw had welded itself to the retainer -- I had to file the screwhead off to remove it. Remove the compass, binnacle and control unit to gain access to the top of the pedestal and the retainer -- from there you can reach down and hold the retainer by hand while removing the screw (assuming your's comes out easier than mine did).
