Started to remove the old broken shifter cable in preparation for replacement. However, I cannot either pull down through or pull up through a sleeve in the pedestal next to the steering wheel hub that, I assume, keeps the cable from touching the steering wheel shaft. I've annotated the attached picture. This assembly is below the rocker arm where the cable attaches to the shifter lever. Has anyone replaced their cable and give me advise on how the cable can be run through this sleeve?

look about 1/2 way down the pedestal in the aft area and you may find a acorn nut attached to the pedestal tube ...that holds a clamp that holds the cables in place to keep them out of the steering chaine

Only unscrew the clamp enough to get the cable out.. if ya unscrew too far the clamp will drop and it is a real bugger to get back on ..
