Your First 38 probably has the same cable configuration as my First 42.. Broke a cable myself, there should be an inspection area in the quarter area to access the side of the trans so you dont have to go over the motor.. Pull the cable and take it down to the local marine store.. Its pretty common fittings on the ends.. measurement can be off by being a foot over sized but cant be shorter.. you also have the inspection area in the quarter to get that cable up the tube to the shifter. took me a good hour to replase the unit on mine.. just a note.. I've replaced the cable to the 4-108 at the same time. to access the screws on the end of the cable under the intake at the pump.. just un-bolt the bracket at the back of the motor that holds the cable.. it all slides out the rear and you can work on it off the motor... Over the past few years I've replaced almost everything on the boat to get it ready for a 5 to 10 year trip out.. give me a shout directly if you need any assistance and cant find it elsewhere......
