Need to replace shifter cable: Anyone know what length? Edison pedastal, Kanzaki trans.

Also need to replace the Throttle cable while I'm there, again: Anyone know what length? Yanmar 2GM20F engine

Finally, anyone know if I need to remove the pedastal/binnacle to get to the underside to replace these cables?

Thanks,
Tim

It shouldn't be too difficult to measure. Just err on side of caution and have it longer rather than exact or shorter.

curious, why do you need to replace it? What issues are you having?

My shifter seems to be very difficult to move in and out of gear and have been looking for a solution.

iSailor, my shifter was stiff, then broke while on a week's cruise. Broke in the pedastal, the threads snapped at the end fitting. Trying to rig something that I could shift with, I cut it down piece by piece (nothing worked) until I had to remove from the trans all together and run control ropes through port holes to operate the transmission (very Jed Clampet). While investigating, discovered the throttle cable housing is totally rotten and will be next to go.

Phoenix, what did you do for cable ends? Also do you have to take the pedastal/binnacle off?

I have an Edson pedastal, Kakzaki trans, Yanmar 2GM20F engine.

Hunter Inc or Hunter Sailboat owners can't help. Kind of dissapointing.

pics of trans cable and bracket

Here are 2 pics of each end of the trans cable. The rusty old bracket is a part of the remote shift kit that was istalled (shifter lever), but is not referenced in any of my manuals and the Yanmar shop has no idea where to get a replacement. Sailboat Owners is at a loss to. . . hope I don't have to fabricate one with the cable housing stop.

Timbo3,
In my case the the previous owner had simply cut the cables as they exited the Pedestal! and installed another control system on the cockpit bulkhead. I presume this was the easiest solution at the time.

I wasn't happy with it so set about restoring the controls back to the pedestal when we bought the boat. I had to remove the complete pedestal inorder to route the cables through. There is a small hole in the bottom plate and i found it impossible to pass the cables up from the bottom withiout fouling the steering chain assembly.

The brackets on the Yanmar 2GM20F were OK on our engine so I could simply attach the teleflex to them. On the pedestal end I bought Edson control kits which included the stainless levers etc and came with the clevis pins for cable connections. Edson kit here: http://www.edsonmarine.com/marinestore/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=1083
