The shifter on my 83 model hunter 34 has gone on the blink. It will go into reverse and neutral but not forward. I checked the tran. and all is well there. It seams that it is in the steering colum. Something must of sliped. Has any one run into this problem? If so I would appreciate some advice. Thanks, D.Nelson

This might help...

I'm not sure, but I believe the 34 has a Merriman pedestal. It probably doesn't matter though. In the Edson pedestal, and probably also in the Merriman, about halfway down the pedestal on the inside is a cable holder. It's function is to keep the cable housings in a rigid position so that the inner cable can slide and perform it's function. There is a bolt that goes through the pedestal to hold this in place. This is possibly what is causing your problem. It is a bit of a pain to get at but if this is the cause of your problem it must be either repaired or replaced. If you need a replacement and you do have the Merriman pedestal, which is almost impossible to find parts for, I would try calling Edson as they are usually very helpful. Good Luck, Len

An easy check: have somebody move the shift lever back and forth while you watch what is happenning at the transmission. Make sure you are getting the full throw of the arm on the port side of the transmission (Yanmar). Good luck, Derek

Shifter Problem

Can you shift into forward down on the transmission? There is an alignment adjustment on the transmission for shifting. The Yanmar manual describes that if the four bolts on the plate containing the shifter lever are loosened, the holes are slotted to allow some movement which actually adjusts how the internal shifter linkage engages. I had to do this after I wound the spinnaker sheet around the prop. It threw something out of kilter inside the transmission and I couldn't get it to shift into forward and it would pop out of reverse by itself. That adjustment fixed my problem. Allan
