Shift Lever Too Tight

It seems it is getting harder and harder to engage the shifter. The trans is fine and I know (76 C30)Atomic 4 are hard but this is getting too tough, ?

Linkage Adjust

On my '76 C-30 the forward engagement is also hard. The reason is...I have the forward adjuster too tight. If yours is the same I'd recommend opening the access plate and backing off the adjuster nut one position. There is a specific order for making the adjustments reverse first then forward or the other way...I'd have to check, Its very simple though. If you don't already know how, look at moyermarine.com FAQ. It tells you how to do it. Other than that, there are many places along the way for the linkage to bind up. Check each one from the lever to the engine.

There is little inside the transmission that would fail.Try disconnecting the linkage from the transmission and verify the cable moves freely with the lever.If it does move easily then it is time to do as the previous post said and adjust the transmission. It is easy and will make the difference.Mine was hell to shift taking a foot at times. After adjusting it became pretty easy.A catalina 30 will never shift as easy as a 27 because they put such a small arm on the transmission and there is little mechanical advantage.
