The shift/throttle lever on my 356 does not stay in any set postion when running. If I place it it in full throttle and let it go, it quickly returnd to a slower postion. Is there a set screw that I can adjust? The dealer said this was normal for the lever to not remain at full throttle.

It is a common problem in any boat, but it is certainly not 'normal'. There may be a friction adjustment within the throttle assembly. If not, get a cable friction clamp from Edson. I did. It has a flare and a nut that puts pressure on the cable thereby inducing some drag. I would suggest you order the part and install it. It is certainly a minimal cost. Ther reason is that it commonly needs readjustment every year or two. And, the dealer is going to just put a U clamp on it which will crush tha cable long-term. See the link for contact info. Adjustment near control
Look to the right of your shift lever and you will find a button that is supposed to cover a set screw to adjust throttle friction. Remove the button and adjust the set screw and you should fix the problem. I have some slippage and just heard about this fix in the last few days. Plan to make the adjustment to mine next weekend.

Maybe I'm missing something here. THe steering system and pedestal on the 356 are whitlock, not Edson. Are you all saying the parts are interchangeable????

Adjustment screw - works
Over Memorial weekend I pulled the plug and adjusted the tension until the throttle stayed in position. If its not for adjustment then what's it for? I had been using a bungee cord to hold the throttle and was very happy about this fix. Jim S/V Java

Careful where you clamp
My dealer gave me a cable clamp to put on--apparently he doesn't know about the adjustment either. Why is it such a secret when practically all the boats report throttle slippage? In any case I put it on and it solved the problem, though there is considerably more drag. However be careful where you put the cable clamp: If you put it near the engine there may well be a springback effect as the cable wire pushes on the clamp which is far away. I put mine on the cable just below the pedestal and there is no noticeable springback. But now that you guys clued me in that there actually IS a friction adjustment screw I will try to adjust that and dump the clamp. Thanks Ivan Bekey

Can someone post a pic of the plug? I looked on my 356 and couldn't find anything on the enclosure the throttle handle connects to. I too have been using a bungy cord.

Confirmed! Set screw works.
The set screw is located under a removable button just to the right of the shift lever. Remove the button and turn the screw clockwise for more friction on the throttle. I made the adjustment today and it works well. Took about one turn for me. My throttle would not hold before either.

Merriman pedestal adjustment?
I am not at my boat, but am wondering if anyone knows if the 1984 H34 series with the Merriman (sp?)pedestal has an adjuster? This happened to me yesterday, just one more thing to curse at.

However, I have a Hunter 31 which doesn't have a set screw or adjustment as some of your more high end boats may have, so I limit my advice to my boat or similar boats. I had the same problem with a "creeping" throttle until I posted here (see "Creeping throttle on Hunter 31" in October 2001) and all you guys gave me advice which resulted in my installation of the cable clamp in an accessible place and some trial and error fine tuning of it to get the right feel, which solved my problem perfectly.

You can get a replacement screw at your local hardware store. The alternative is to add a cable clamp. You can get one from Morse. If you look in the photo forum you will see a post that I did on 'Throttle Creep'. The device is called a 'J' clamp and they cost about $20. They are very easy to install and it does not crush the cable (just adds enough tension).
